Maria Urba\u0144ska, this year’s graduate of the Faculty of Information Technology and Telecommunications at Wroc\u0142aw University of Science and Technology, has decided to create a mobile application that will make life easier for deaf people. The programme is to translate a section of Polish Sign Language (PJM) in real time using the camera on the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

“At this stage, it is all about basic communication. The application is intended to help in everyday situations, e.g. in a shop, at the post office, at the doctor’s, and, in time, also at the office. The problems that Deaf people have to face on a daily basis are indeed many”, says Urba\u0144ska.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the age of Internet translators, it is already possible to translate most texts from various languages, but such a possibility is not yet available to sign language speakers. The application created by the PWr graduate translates an image into a text or voice message. In the future, Maria Urba\u0144ska also plans to develop communication in the other direction. This is a much more difficult task, but very much needed.<\/span><\/p>\n
