Fundamental works on quantum entanglement were created in the 1990s at the University of Gdańsk. The Warsaw and Krakow centers have a long tradition in the field of quantum optics, which is the source of majority of the current research on new methods of communication, detection, metrology and imaging. Scientists of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń are working on very precise atomic clocks that can be used in space navigation.

Eight Polish research units have signed a letter of intent on the coordination of activities for the development of Polish quantum research.
